May The Force Be With You... No Really!

Today, geeks across the country rejoice as the long-awaited sequel to one of the most popular movie franchises in history opens in cinemas across the country - Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens!

Whether you're a hardcore fan, distant admirer or loathe the Star Wars movies altogether, it's been hard to avoid the media hype surrounding this film. It's quite a big deal...at least in terms of Hollywood and marketing anyway.

For those of us who are really pumped for the movie (seriously, I can't wait!), I felt compelled to write this blog entry and propose that some of the ideas and concepts that excite us about these films are not necessarily restricted to just the world of science fiction or fantasy, but are actually quite true and relevant to us as Christians. For example...

As a Christian, I believe that we are called to live a life of adventure - to step out of the comfort of our mundane lives, experience the world and share (and live out) the Good News of Jesus with all sorts of interesting characters.

As a follower of Jesus, I believe that we are a part of a Rebel Alliance (or Resistance), fighting against political tyranny and the supernatural powers of the Dark Side that seek to destroy us and those we love.

As a "warrior" of The Way, I believe that we have been given an ancient, elegant weapon - the Word - to protect us from evil and aid us in restoring peace and justice to the galaxy.

And as a person of faith, I believe that there is an all powerful Force that surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together. In fact, in one week of this post, we will be celebrating the fact that our Force became flesh and made His dwelling among us! Truly fantastical stuff!

Yes, Star Wars is something that we can totally be excited for...but let us not forget that once the credits roll at the end, our Story continues and is something that we should be equally excited about (and more!)

So please...go see the movie, be wowed by the spectacle, fall in love with the characters, but once it's over - don't forget the adventure that you're already in! Oh, and remember...

The Force really will with be you...always!
