Metro's Statement On Racial Injustice

Metro Community Church mourns the killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, among countless other African American men and women as a result of racial hatred. As Christians, we believe in the value and sanctity of all lives, specifically because all of humanity is created in the image of God. When a person - regardless of ethnicity - is robbed of the right to live and flourish without fear of harm in God’s creation, it is not just tragic – it is sinful. Racism is sin – unequivocally. Its manifestations in harassment or murder are sin.

As believers, we are called to name sin, expose it, and work to eradicate it. The sin of racism must be destroyed through prayer, self-reflection, true repentance, and forgiveness in the individual – but in justice within our systems. But like any sin, racism often reconfigures itself and will seek to return, so we must stay vigilant.

Jesus Christ has destroyed the dividing wall of hostility between us (Ephesians 2:14). As Christians, we must ensure that it is not rebuilt. As Pastor Ancy taught us, peacemaking is not the avoidance of conflict; it is the Holy Spirit inspired confrontation with conflict to establish God’s peace.

In this season of great racial division, we must be the active peacemakers Christ called us to be. Silence is complicity and doing nothing is not an option. James 4:17 reminds us, “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” As a church, we will continue to lift the refrain #blacklivesmatter until all lives matter in our nation and throughout the world.

In the coming days and weeks, you will find ways to actively engage in seeking racial reconciliation and justice. We pray you will join us.
